With more sophisticated artificial intelligence programs, robots (and other virtual beings such as video game characters) are fast becoming more and more human in their behaviours. Do you think this is a positive or negative development? Why?
Please post your answers in the comments section.
I find this development to be on the fence. It is somewhat negative and somewhat positive. The reason I believe that this development is negative is because, If artificial intelligence are becoming preferred and more human then our morals as actual sentiant beings will be scewed. Also if artificial intelligence becomes more prefrred then it may very well take over the jobs of people themselves, and if that were to happen how are we to make a living or even survive? The reason why I think it can be positive is because things such as video game characters or virtual beings become more believable and it takes story telling to a whole new level.
ReplyDeleteIm personally split by weather it is positive or negative .It is positive because it shows advancements in human knowledge and I feel it's the next step in progression in our human evolution.Humans are always looking for power and knowledge to help us thrive,ei manifestdestiny .We try to project our ideal image (and ignore our imperfections) onto virtual softwares and hardwares so that we may be seen as creators or "gods". The negative aspect is that the imperfections is what makes us human and when that line between machine and human is blurred, oneday humans may be completly removed and exchanged for machines or robots. Granted moral's, and emotions are traits of human's and are seen at birth, but as we advance simulations of those human traits may be seen in only 1's and 0's...
ReplyDeleteI believe that AI technology is negative in many aspects.
ReplyDeleteIn cases such as the man and his DS game, it may be severely detrimental to human social skills. The lack of actual human interaction these days is already a problem with the younger generation in society, and making it so that these AI characters that simulate actual human feats will only add onto the problem. This may be thinking too far ahead, but if AI were to simulate intelligence, behaviour, AND looks, and if humans were to "marry" them, then it can cause serious problems to our future society and may result in a lack of reproduction and an eventual decrease in population.
Secondly, when we look at Watson, AI similiar to AI are only possible through human programming. Humans may not always be correct, so you may as well be programming the AI with false information. AI are also prone to glitches, so if used as a "cybernetic assistant", as the article calls it, then there may be severe miscalculations which will result in the surgical room.
Let's not forget the old believe that if given the chance and technology of that time period, AI can very well take over society, enslaving humans. As comical as it may sound, it should be taken into consideration for the sake of humanity.
I think that this constant and quick development of AI programs taking on human characteristics could be very dangerous. At the moment, for the most part, computers are seen, used, and treated as tools, with no consideration for their "feelings" or "emotions." If these AI programs are allowed to become more and more human, they may start to feel things, and no longer want to be simply "used" by real humans to do their tasks. I believe that eventually humans would have to treat a computer or any other electronic the way that they would treat another human or animal, in a sense that the feelings of the creature must be taken into consideration when you use them. If AI programs become available to feel human emotion, feelings such as rage and the need to take revenge can also be felt. And who knows what a super computer can do with your life in an age where everything is electronic.
ReplyDeleteALthough it's a great step for mankind and technology, I think it's a negative development. If robots and computers start doing things that humans do and start building characteristics that humans have, then humans would be replaced in the blink of an eye. We wouldn't have jobs, companies wouldn't have to pay employees because computers/robots would be doing stuff probably better and faster than humans. Even though it can be seen as a positive development for those who will benefit from this, in the end if humans start being replaced by machines at work, we'd all be stay at home moms.
ReplyDeleteThe advancement of technology is a positive development...to an extent.
ReplyDeleteThe purpose of advancing technology is to make peoples lives easier and more accessible. Creating AI like Watson can help with problems that "humans" themselves cannot solve. The goal of AI (Artifical Intelligence) is to create "Intelligence" on par, or superior to humanity. Robotics technology help with manufacturing, and other primary sectors. Video Games are about creating an interactive, immersive experience, one that balances realism with entertainment. Advancements in technology add to these factors. The Love Plus example is in my opinion misleading, a minority of people does not create a world-wide issue. There are stranger cases of legal marriage and obsession in the world. Violent video games being a perfect example.
The ethical question (conspiracy theories aside) is, how long until technology gets to the point where humans aren't needed? If we are striving to "create" perfect, human-like technology, is humanity needed? already machines are replacing factory workers and people are losing jobs.\
But until we get to that point, I believe advancing technology benefits humanity, making our lives easier and more comfortable.
I believe that computers becoming more human is a negative development. Computers that are able to express emotion and make decisions because of their human-like behaviour is potential for disaster. Humans throughout history have segregated those who were different. Wether for: race, creed, age or even the way they chose to express themselves, humans always find a way to harm each other. Having a computer that has the ability to act like a human will most likely start a chain of abuse and discrimination. For example, in the movie "I, Robot", robots have human-like abilities, but yet they are used as slaves for the humans; having to obey the Three Laws of Robotics. That's why I believe it is a negative development. Humans would just abuse the power they had over the computers and would want to constantly control them.
ReplyDeleteI think that this is a negative development because as these more sophisticated artificial intelligence programs become more human in their behaviour, it will take over our roles. Humans will start to become more lazy and careless and robots and other virtual beings will become more powerful and this could result in our downfall. On the other hand, the growth of these artificial intelligence robots can help the ones in need or just to make life easier.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this developement is negative. Since technology will advance continuously, eventually humans will be too depended on technology. When you have technology and robots doing everything for you, you will no longer have the need to actually do anything. I believe that technology does benefit us, but we have to be careful not to depend on it too heavily.
ReplyDeleteI believe this development can be both negative and positive depending on how it is dealt with. Artificial intelligence programs can help make life easier for humans, as well as it can help people emotionally like Sal9000. But when people depend on it too much, humans will become lazy, some may even begin to lose purpose in life due to self control from relying on technology too much. Though many jobs are lost as technology develops human will always come up with more jobs as technology develops. In the end it depends on how much people rely on technology.
ReplyDeleteI understand that there are some positive aspects to these sorts of technologies but personally, I think that they are a negative development to society. People, even now with their computer and other devices, are much too dependent on their technologies and to include AI into that will make it even worse. As well, they make the need for real people unecessary. They limit social interactions and have the capacity to take over in the workplace sector. New technology is good, but AI may not be the best thing.
ReplyDeleteI think the idea of more sophisticated artificial intelligence programs, like robots would be a negative development to our society because it would create decrease in jobs for humans. Humans have alot of purpose in life, acquiring jobs to make a living and supporting their families. If these AI programs were to be further established then humans would have less of a purpose in life towards jobs. Many of their daily duties or employment opportunities would be taken up by these "robots", so there would be less of a chance for humans to continue employment. Basically we would be replaced by these "robots" and humans would have nothing to do in the work force. Also, the machines can make mistakes sometimes when the operating system does not function as expected. The information in these systems can be overloaded at one point or another, making it difficult to respond/act correctly.
ReplyDeleteEven though the changes in technology seem positive I personally believe it is more of a negative change. Many people will be losing their jobs because of this as machines are able to do human tasks faster and longer. Humans may not be first choice for common jobs resulting in them being useless.
ReplyDeleteI think this as positive because it shows how far technology has gone along way since the 1990's, i think in a few years we will start see technology just like what we see in the jetsons with the flying cars.
ReplyDeletei think this is a negative thing because what makes this world beautiful is the creativaty and emotions that influence the world in architecture, design, music, movies, clothes and pretty much everything humans have made. for exaple when i lisen to music i start to lisen to what the artist has to say, start to see from his/her perspective and begin to feel for them, but if the music was made by a robot it would lack the human emotions that artists put into songs and i wouldnt be able to relate at all to any kind of AI generated art. if we were to start making AI robots design alot of things in the world everything would be perfict but lack human emotion, individuality and perspectives and these are the things that make the world a great place, not the perfection but the imperfetion of human nature. i think if we start making AI a big part of this world then everything would be alot less soulful and alot more dehumanized
