Art and Morality Question #3

Does an artist have the freedom to depict any subject matter? Is there subject matter that should be off-limits no matter what?

  1. No, I don't believe that there should be any off-limits. We're entitled to freedom of expression and all, but if the artist so chooses to depict something horrifying or taboo, then they should be willing to face the risks of criticism or maybe even worse.

  2. I believe an artist has the freedom to depict any subject matter, considering the artist has consent (from a person, if the subject matter one). Off-limit subject matter would be something that the artist did not get permission to use as a model, inspiration, etc.

  4. Artist may get ideas and inspiration from almost anything they see or experience so i think it would be wrong to say they cannot use a something because it is off limits.

  5. I think there is no limit to what the artist can depict because if there was a limit the arthist cant express himself and the art wont look that of if there were no limits

  6. Art is something that anyone can use. Even if the subject is disturbing, it is a way that people describe themsleves.

  8. I think everyone has the freedom to depict any subject matter. Art is an expression one an individual's emotions and thinking, therefore there should be no limits to any subject matter.

  10. I dont think art should have any limits to it because art can be used to express personal opinions and views. Art should not be depicted in any matter shape or form because if it had limits, it would restrict artists from creating one of the best pieces of artwork. We have the freedom of expression so there shouldnt be any restrictions on art, otherwise we would be in a sense violating the law.

  11. Absolutely not. Certain artwork is censored and controlled by media and the society (to an extent). If a topic is seen negatively by society, despite some people enjoying the artwork, the artist will be condemned for doing "wrong" I despise censorship, activists that are trying to make a difference are often extreme in their methods to censor and eliminate certain art. (Movies, Music, Video Games etc moreso than traditional art)

There ARE topics that in my opinion should be controlled. However, I may be a hypocrite, but there's a limit to the subject matter you should control. Some of what tries to be censored is ridiculous, Bill 156 (Tokyo Manga Ban) being a perfect example.

  12. I personally think that an artist has the freedom to depict any subject matter with no limits because part of being an artist is to be spontaneous and creative. and to be spontaneous you need to have the ability to make decisions and take risks.

  13. Art is an expression of one's views on the world around them. We must be open to everyones views and judge them accordingly so we may evaluate ourselves to better us as individuals living in a society. If an artist depicts anti government artwork, we cannot simply dismiss it or ban it because it goes against our beliefes.Everything needs to be put into perspective.

  14. I think an artist should not have any restrictions on what they depict. Art is how a person can express themselves, so they should have the freedom to express it however they want to. This doesn't mean that everyone should like what is depicted, just that the artist should have the freedom to depict what they want.

  15. Art is represented as the esthetic in ones life. The artwork reflects that life in any manner the artist chooses.

  16. Artist can depict anything they want because in the end it's the artist that decides whether they think it is art.

  17. I really agree with everyone else because art has no limits. therefore, artists have their freedom to choose everything they like.

  18. Having put some thought into this I think that there should be a limit; this because having my preferences ,there are some things that I dont want to see. On the contrary though I cannot impose this onto someone else as it is 'my' preference ,in fact this is setting my own limit to what I can or cannot make. Then there is already a limit - that made by the artist himself.
