Does an artist have a responsibility to use his or her art to improve society? Give an example of an irresponsible artist whose art harms our society and explain why.
I think that art to an artist is a form of expression, and not done to improve society. Of course, their art will have some impact on society, whether positive or negative, and the artist should atleast be aware of it. Many songs on the radio today talk about drugs, alcohol, abuse, etc. These messages are not good influences to the audience that most singers/songwriters aim for, making their art irresponsible. It harms society because it makes drugs and alochol look "cool" and seem like there are no consequences to partying and drinking all night.
No, I don't think they are responsible for anything. But the way it's distributed should be limited. A strict regulation on the program on TV and magazines and on the web. I think Eminem is an example of negative influence on the society.
Art is no utopia. It is something that artist do because they like it or they are good at or what message they are trying to interpret.
True, some artist have showed things to make a difference in society, but at the end it is the viewer that judge rather they should do something or not.
I don't think they are responsible for any effects their artwork have on their society. An artist's artwork is an expression of what the artist feels. Even though some artworks have a great impact on the society, it doesn't mean the artist himself is responsible. It all depends on how an individual thinks.
i dont think its the artists responsibility to improve society because art is a way to express yourself and other people that are influenced by it is technically their fault.
They don't have a responsibility, but they have the freedom to do so if they want. Art is a way to express yourself and if you want to change the world by all means, but it's not forced. Rappers and their "music". Some rappers actually talk about meaningful things, but the artists who go rap about you know.."inappropriate" stuff has a really bad influence on the younger kids. All the rappers talk about is sex, so obviously kids get pregnant when they're not suppose to. Because they hear these rap songs all the time they're bound to do what they say..
No. Art is the expression of the artist. They shouldn't be concerned with bettering society/making a difference, instead focusing on expressing themselves through their artwork.
However, many pieces of art can depict the artists view on society, if its a personal connection/frustration then that is perfectly fine, but they have no moral responsibility to make the world a better place.
I dont think that an artist has responsibility to use his or her art to improve society because it is their own personal way of expressing their views on life. They have the freedom to express themselves through art. Irresponsible artists whose art can harm society are those who express their art in negative ways. Such as musicians who express their music negatively, using words that depict society. Also expressing their thoughts through music that sends the wrong message to those listening. Another example is the media as a whole. There is so much media influence now adays that everyone is getting the wrong impressions on certain issues.
An artist may express himself if it effects society either possitivly or negatively, and I feel that there is no way to effect society negatively. Some example one may use could be musicians who use lyrics that involve alcohol, smoking, sex, ect. These are only words and terms that we as human enjoy as entertainment. These are also tools, that older generations should use to teach the future generations. If no one was to oppose and learn from these bad habbits such as drinking, the deaths caused by the substance would spike dramatically, but the same would happen if you censored it. We need to teach the future of humanity the reasons of boundaries and how to limit yourself. This is the only way we may progress and thrive!
No, I don't think an artist should have any obligation to do anything for society if they don't want to. An artist can produce artwork for a large audience, a small audience or just themselves if they want to. They make art because they want to, not because they feel pressured to.
I don't think an artist should be responsible to use their art for the improvement of society. This is because art is about freedom and expression of the artist. If the artist wants to improve the society by using their art, they can, but it is not their responsibility, only a simple act a freedom.
: vague answer. I would say the question posed was rather 'unaswerable' As an artist makes their work they want to show show something ,make a comment ,have a feeling conveyed... . This statement they are trying to make is never heard or seen as it was intended. Each viewer comes to their own consensus as to what has been said ,changing that to something they want to hear and giving meaning to what wasnt supposed to have. Then every artwork has its part in molding the 'society' as it where , involuntarily ,whether intended or not - what is made has to be eaten(or something like that)
...art that harms our society? I disagree with this but SuperFlat has been used in foul ways.

Art cannot effect the society physically but physiologically depending on how one may interpret it.
